Botulism: rare illness caused by Clostridium botulinum bacteria that may enter through wounds or may live in improperly canned/preserved food such as home-canned vegetables, smoked/raw fish, honey or corn syrup and cured pork and ham. The bacteria produces toxins that lead to severe poisoning with symptoms of abdominal cramps, breathing difficulty, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, weakness with paralysis. It is treated with an injection of botulinus antitoxin.
