The U.S. trails the rest of the world when it comes to paid family leave: we're one of only a handful of countries, including Papua New Guinea and Suriname, that don't provide any. This leaves all working women and their families in the lurch, from lawyers to restaurant servers. While we do have the Family and Medical Leave Act, which gives the right to 12 weeks of unpaid leave, it only covers certain workers.
