This detail from folio 21 verso is a symbol of human kind. It stands opposite the beginning of the gospel to St Matthew. The figure resembles a doll without arms; the body is covered with a chequered pattern of inlay work. The head has no neck, and the hair, hanging straight back from the forehead to behind the ears, recalls the tonsure of Irish monks as seen in other artwork from the region. The feet are seen from a side angle.
c.690-710.The Book of Durrow is unusual in that it does not use the traditional scheme for assigning the symbols to the Evangelists. Each Gospel begins with an Evangelist's symbol-a man for Matthew, an eagle for Mark (not the lion traditionally used), a calf for Luke and a lion for John (not the eagle traditionally used). This is also known as the pre-Vulgate arrangement.Trinity College Library.
