Lava formation over the West Kamokuna lava skylight, on the big island of Hawaii. This formation happens when molten lava travels across channels called lava tubes. Buried underground, these tubes only become visible when part of the roof collapses, creating a lava skylight. Pink slug survives Australia bushfires | CNN ~ (Triboniophorus sp. nov. 'Kaputar') Found only in the summit area of Mount Kaputar, an isolated inactive volcano in New South Wales, this 8" slug has survived the devastating bushfires that ripped through much of its habitat. Nat'l Parks & Wildlife Service found "about 60" slugs alive. Previously thought to be a variation of the red triangle slug, in 2013 it was identified as a new species. A low-precipitation supercell ~ In the foreground is the rotating updraft where warm air spirals inward & upward. Behind this corkscrew tower is probably a narrow shaft of heavy rain & hail. Behind, the storm’s pink & violet anvil spreads outward downwind. From time to time, sheet-light crackles of lightning can crawl along this 10-mile-high anvil.
