According to legend Poseidon sent King Minos a bull for sacrifice. But the Cretan king kept it alive. So Poseidon made Minos' wife, Pasiphae, fall in love with it, thus conceiving the Minotaur. Minos then confined it to a Labyrinth created by Daedalus. One day, Minos' son. Androgeos, was killed by the Athenians. To avenge his death, Minos demanded seven Athenian boys and seven maidens, every ninth year, to be killed by the monster. This went on until Theseus, who killed it.
