The Book Thief was set in the time period of WWII and in Nazi Germany. Adolf Hitler was the dictator of Nazi Germany and he is the historical aspect of the novel because the characters often reference him and blame him for their problems.

It is often forgotten - the extent of sheltering in London tube stations during the First World War. This poster was issued in 1917 - banning birds, cats, etc from the stations during raids.
