U.S. Constitution is a Social Studies lesson designed to teach upper elementary students about the historical context in which the document was written, and why we have a Constitution. Students read an original, content-rich informational text about the Constitution. They use information in the text to create two foldables. Students then apply their knowledge to a constructed-response writing prompt in which they must cite their evidence using details in the text.
Students are divided up into four countries: Has A lot, Has Some, Needs A lot, and Needs Some. Each country is given certain resources (paper clips, rulers, pencils, etc.) and has certain tasks they must complete (build shelter, gather food, etc.). The countries must trade with one another to collect the resources they need to complete their tasks.

"Table Texting" is a fun, interactive strategy you can use with any piece of text or topic. The key is to pose a higher-level question that encourages thinking among students. Students respond to the question in writing. The teacher or facilitator collects the papers and redistributes them. Students get to read other responses and reply. The process continues until all of the speech bubbles are completed. At the end, students get to read their classmates' responses. Great for upper grades.
