Cobnuts and filberts are cultivated varieties of hazelnut (corylus avellana) that have been bred for improved flavour and productivity. Coppicing allows for ease of access so that the nuts can be picked for human consumption in their 'green' succulent stage. As long as new growth is protected coppiced trees can be integrated into pasture systems and provide mast for livestock. Squirrels can denude entire trees but generally can't overwhelm crops of several acres. Self sterile. Zone 4-9

Chickens can work wonders in an orchard. They mow the grass, prune suckers, fertilize the trees, keep pests in check and clean up fallen fruit. More yield, less work. And fresh eggs to boot. Awesome.

Sheep, cattle and pigs all thrive in old fashioned orchards, foraging on grass and windfalls. They also help control weeds and brambles that may otherwise hinder harvest.
