March 1965: MLK, Jr. et al on the 4th day of the Selma- Montgomery March, org. by the Southern Christian Ldshp Conf. to register black voters in the South. Initially, marchers were met with violent resistance by authorities. Finally (under protection of federalized National Guard), marchers reached the state capitol (Montgomery). The march drew attn to the difficulty black voters in the South faced, and the need for a Voting Rights Act, passed later that year.
