Sweet oranges belong to the Citrus sinensis botanical species, resulting from the crossbreeding of a pummelo and a mandarin. The types of sweet oranges include navels, valencias, and blood oranges. Navels are seedless because a mutation caused a small fruit to develop on the flower end of the fruit, which creates the “belly button” appearance. The original mutation was found in Brazil in the 1800s and was brought to the United States as the Washington navel orange. Navel oranges are self-fertile
