Peter III of Russia by Pfandzelt. Peter was born a prince of Holstein-Gottorp in 1728 and until he was taken to Russia in 1742 (at the age of 14) by his aunt, Empress Elizabeth, was known as Karl Peter Ulrich. He became Duke of Holstein-Gottorp in 1739. Immature and wayward he hated Russia and never learnt to speak fluent Russian - or indeed French (the official court language).

Childish Tsar Peter III of Russia (1728-62), a Prince of Holstein-Gottorp. He was the husband of Catherine II "The Great", a former Princess of Anhalt-Zerbst. She had him murdered and ascended the Russian throne herself.
