Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex-Note the dyed beard. Gentlemen of Elizabeth I's court were known to dye their beards this 'red gold' shade, to honor their Queen. (Although perhaps, like many men, the earl's beard was naturally of a different color than his hair.)  I have read that men of the era starched their beards as well.
