Buy a 15 gallon wash pail from Lowe's. Get four bricks, Put the bricks inside the pail. Spread them out flat, to cover the bottom of the pail, and then set your logs on top of the bricks. This allows for airflow under your logs to keep the fire going.
I remember autumn bon fires in the back garden (yard) in Brooklyn, NY. For safety, my brother made them in a big steele drum. No need for fire permits or safety and environmental laws in those days; just fun and fresh, autumn evening air.
