The first quarter horse registered in the American Quarter Horse Association when it was founded in Wimpy was Grand Champion at the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show that year and was owned by the King Ranch.

The great Doc O'Lena - Shorty Freeman and Doc O’Lena marked 220.5 to win the 1970 NCHA Futurity, and it was the first time a horse had topped both go-rounds, the semi-finals and the finals. Doc O’Lena was bred by Dr. & Mrs. Stephen Jensen and owned by Adrian Berryhill.
