Duncan's choreography, comprised of pleasing poses and images, continued the 19th-century affinity for pictorial beauty. Unlike many other dancers, however, Duncan excelled in conveying the emotional impulses of music. She also effectively expressed her spirituality through movement. In her essay “The Dancer of the Future”, Duncan outlined her beliefs that dance should embrace gravity, not defy it, and that all movement begins in the solar plexus.
