Emile Bernard produced a self-portrait (left), which he inscribed with the text “à mon copain Vincent” and sent to Vincent. He painted this self-portrait including Gauguin in the background. Van Gogh was enthusiastic about it – “a couple of simple tones, a couple of dark lines, but it is [as] elegant as a real, genuine Manet”. Gauguin also sent Van Gogh a self-portrait (right), which included a portrait of Bernard in the background. http://www.vangoghmuseum.nl/vgm/index.jsp?page=4739=en
