'Belle' Director Amma Asante on How the Indie Drama Turned Her Into a Hollywood Player

WOW! A film is in production about Dido Elizabeth Belle, the mixed-race daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay. She lived at Kenwood House with the her great-uncle, the Earl of Mansfield, a judge, famous for presiding over the Somerset case regarding the legality of slavery in England. "This is an important story which still has great resonance today," said producer Damian Jones.  "[Director Amma Asante] has created a powerful tale inspired by true historical events...”

A film (Belle) inspired by the life of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the first black woman to be introduced to high society in Georgian times. Dido Elizabeth Belle was an illegitimate daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay and an African woman known as Belle.

{ USA TODAY } Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) raises Dido in a loving way, but still allows some discrimination even within his own home. In London, he does not allow Dido to eat with the family when guests are present. She is allowed to join them after the meal. When Dido hears this, "she is very upset," says Asante. "He's a man who will respond differently at the end of the film."

'Belle' breaks through the aristocratic color barrier

Belle is based on the real-life story of that woman, Dido Elizabeth Belle, who was the daughter of a Royal Navy captain and the slave he met after capturing a Spanish ship.
