Throwback Thursday to Greene Vardiman Black (1836–1915), commonly known as G.V. Black, who is known as the father of modern dentistry in the US. He was born in Illinois in 1836 and by the age of 17 he began studying medicine with his brother Thomas. After serving in the Civil War he began an active career in the underdeveloped field of dentistry. In 1894 he became the first Dean of Northwestern University Dental School which closed 107 years later in 2001.
