The Mars Pathfinder Lander and rover Sojourner were launched on December 4, 1996. Arriving at Mars July 4, 1997, it was the first spacecraft to land on the surface of the Red Planet since the Viking mission in 1976. The spacecraft operated for 90 days / Full-scale engineering prototype Lander and full-scale model of Sojourner on display at Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA.
May 2008 NASA landed the Phoenix spacecraft on Mars' arctic plains to study whether liquid water may have existed there
