The Martyrdom of Saint Denis by Leon Bonnat. Denis, which derives from Dionysius, was beheaded along with companions Rusticus and Eleutherius on Paris' highest hill, sacred to the druids, viz. Montmartre [mons mercurei et mons martis]. Denis famously picked up his head & walked 6 miles, preaching the whole time. The spot where he finally dropped dead is the site of his current basilica [built by St Genevieve & the peo of Paris?].
