Abandoning German roots, Bill Brandt life claimed that he was born and grew up in south London. Almost immediately after the war, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and he had to spend his youth in sanatoriums Davos in Switzerland, like the characters of the novel by Thomas Mann,
