The USS West Virginia, a Pennsylvania class armored cruiser, was commissioned in 1905 and initially served as part of the Atlantic fleet before joining the Pacific fleet in 1908. We're estimating the date of this view of her in the Portland harbor as 1911, as it shows her newly created cage mast, added in late 1910. At that time, cage masts were being added to many USS ships, in order to make the observation posts mounted on the masts less vulnerable to shells from enemy ships.

(1) USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was a cruiser of the United States Navy. She holds a place in history due to the circumstances of her sinking, which led to the greatest single loss of life at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy. On 30 July 1945, shortly after delivering critical parts for the first atomic bomb, the ship was torpedoed by a japanese submarine, sinking in 12 minutes.

Elk Rock Trestle, on the line from Portland to Oswego (now Lake Oswego). Built in 1887 by the Portland and Willamette Valley Railroad as a narrow gauge line, the line was dual-tracked after it was sold to Southern Pacific in 1892. The narrow gauge rails were removed in 1895. This view shows both gauges, dating the photo to between 1892 and 1895. Initially steam-powered, the line was electrified in 1912. Because of falling rock, the trestle was replaced by a tunnel in 1921.
