This 'gastric rainbow', is a microscopic section through a mouse stomach. The black area at the top is where food is digested by enzymes and acids, and these are made by the green and magenta cells, respectively. The red cells that line the surface of the stomach secrete mucus to protect the stomach from digesting itself.

This brilliant gastric image comes just in time for lunch through much of the Western Hemisphere - mouse stomach section with mucous-secreting cells (red) along stomach lining & acid-producing cells (green & magenta).

The retina contains five classes of neurons: photoreceptors (purple), horizontal cells (yellow), bipolar neurons (green), amacrine cells (pink and blue), and ganglion cells (pink and blue). In this cross section of an adult mouse retina, only a subset of bipolar cells, “the ON bipolar cells” are visible by their expression of GFP (green). The pink and blue speckled striations at the bottom of the image mark the fiber layer, which contains the ganglion cell axons that will form the optic…

Thanks to filmaker Louie Schwartzberger for his wonder, curiosity and reverence for life. http://www.ted.com/talks/louie_schwartzberg_hidden_miracles_of_the_natural_world

This film by Louie Schwartzberg is spectacular. He bends the boundaries of time and space with high-speed cameras, time lapses and microscopes at with his film titled "Mysteries of the Unseen World.

a series of confocal microscope images shows the regular, crystal-like architecture of the eye of a common blue damselfly (Enallagma cyathigerum), an active visual predator and a swift flyer.

Only cardiac muscle has this particular appearance, which is given to it by something called intercalated discs. Cardiac muscle also consists of single muscle cells, called Cardiomyocytes; where something such as skeletal muscle cells are MULTInucleated (more than one cell nucleus).
