Boston, the Swiss and solar-powered boat– why Boston matters in the solar conversation

The most impressive solar-powered vehicle ever constructed is quite literally out of this world. The International Space Station, a monumental feat of engineering, gets all of its electricity from solar power. It is equipped with eight solar array wings, each covered in nearly 33,000 solar cells. The arrays are double-sided so that they can collect energy from the Sun and light reflected off the Earth at the same time.

Planetsolar has completed its journey as the first solar powered boat to circle the world. The top of the catamaran is covered in a spread of photovoltaic panels and over 38,000 solar cells that fueled six blocks of massive lithium-ion batteries. Advanced engineering and science created a boat that uses marginally less energy than standard motorized boats of its size. An aerodynamic and energy efficient design makes the Planetsolar the new wave of aquatic engineering.

This is a picture of the first boat which sailing round the world by using''sun energy'' it's called PLANET SOLAR and it started from the Mediterranean sea.

Vripack’s “Sunny Side Up II” is powered by five solar panels and has a top speed of 19.2km (10.36kts) per hour. The maximum power available is 2400kW. The six meter (19.7ft) boat is propelled by a custom made 2 blade propeller mounted on a forward innovative POD which was then connected to an electric engine. The body consists of carbon fiber and epoxy glue. Inspired by the BMW Gina Light Visionary Model, the team managed to save weight and thus able to gain speed as some parts of the boat…
