In a journey that took more than three years, the Polos travelled through Armenia, Persia, Afghanistan, crossing over the Pamir Mountains, Silk Road, and the Taklamakan and Gobi desert, to reach Cambaluc (modern-day Beijing). For the next 17 years, he held several offices at Khan’s court, such as, being the Khan’s ambassador and the governor of the city of Yangzhou. He also commandeered missions into India and Burma. He returned to Venice in 1295
