Recent analysis of the remains of Windeby “girl,” along with preliminary DNA tests, showed that she was probably a boy. The body’s hair, once thought to have been shaved to mark a young woman as an adultress, may have been scraped off by archaeologists’ trowels. The band of cloth around the face, at first interpreted as a gag or blindfold used during torture, is now seen as simply a means to cover the eyes of the dead. The boy was buried in a bog in northern Germany.

Kreepen Man, shortly after his recovery from a Lower Saxony (Germany) bog in 1903. His body has since fallen apart. The body was found lying face down on 9 or 10 June 1903. No clothing was found on the body, although stones and twigs were nearby. The remains were destroyed during World War II, but was dated to 1440–1625 CE after a piece of his hair was found.

Chauchilla is the only archaeological site in Peru, in which ancient mummies are seen in their original graves, along with ancient artifacts, dating back to 1000 AD. This cemetery was for many years looted by treasure hunters, who destroyed the place completely, taking away all the treasures the mummies kept in their tombs for centuries.

Braided with a flourish, the hair on Osterby Man, a body dug from a bog in northern Germany, is wound in an Iron Age style called a Swabian knot. Tacitus, a Roman historian, wrote that free men belonging to a group called the Suevians wore their hair like this and that young warriors from other Germanic tribes copied the style. “They thus dress when proceeding to war," wrote Tacitus, “and deck their heads so as to add to their height and terror in the eyes of the enemy.”

A severed head was discovered wrapped in a cape of deerskin with the hair on top still intact, tied in a Swabian knot, and discolored red from thousands of years in the bog. Scientists hypothesize that the head alone was used as a sacrifice.
