Mourning evening dress, Scotland, the Victoria & Albert Museum This black velvet evening dress was worn Jane Johnstone niece of William Jardine founder of Hong Kong merchants Jardine, Matheson & Co. Even mourning was stylish then

Phebe Caroline Jones wore this blue brocade empire gown around the time of her 1824 marriage to Samuel Finley Patterson, a prominent politician and railroad executive. Jones grew up on Palmyra Plantation in Wilkes (present-day Caldwell) County, the daughter of a War of 1812 commander and granddaughter of a Revolutionary War leader. She and her husband inherited Palmyra after her father’s death. #TextileTuesday

A dress for Honoria, heroine of Just Like Heaven by Julia Quinn. I always think of her in purples and blues--JQ. silk, extra sleeve to make the gown a day dress.
