A ladybug math mat to use when practicing composing and decomposing numbers. Place the target number of 2 color counters in a small cup and spill them out on the mat. Separate the colors on each side of the ladybug and record the combination.
This can be a group work structured activity that teaches addition. Since symbols are used, this should be introduced later when the children have a strong understanding of numbers and adding. and items are used in this activity.
Decomposing Numbers: can do an activity with the number cubes. Students roll a number. Put that number of blocks in the big circle then decompose into 2 smaller numbers. Give students a recording sheet.
