During the Holocaust, one group of killers stood out as more vicious, murderous, and bloodthirsty than all others. The Ustasha of Yugoslavia was a Muslim-Catholic alliance of Nazi killers so beastly that even Nazi officials in Berlin were horrified.

The WWII concentration camp in Sisak consisted mostly of children. They took children away from their parents and attempted to re-educate them. Instead, many were beaten, died of disease, and starved to death. Red Cross employees teamed up with some local Yugoslavs and tried to smuggle out as many as children as they could, saving their lives.

Maria Mandel after her arrest by US troops, 1945. Top ranking official at Auschwitz-Birkenau responsible for the deaths of over 500,000 female prisoners. The United States Army arrested Mandel on August 10, 1945. She was handed over to the Republic of Poland in November 1946, and in November 1947 she was tried in a Kraków courtroom in the Auschwitz Trial and sentenced to death. Mandel was hanged on January 24, 1948 at the age of 36.

The 89th Infantry Division in World War II was the first unit to actually come upon a Nazi concentration camp. The discovery of the Ohrdruf camp, by the 89th Infantry Division, is memorialized in the Holocaust Museum located in Washington, DC. Ohrdruf was a work camp, not an extermination camp, but the difference is difficult to discern. Prisoners were literally worked to death and disposed of by burning in incinerators, which was the most "cost-effective method".
