Sigismund II Augustus Jagiello  (1520-1572 ) was king of Poland from 1548 to 1572 and the Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1529 : only son of Sigismund I and his second wife, Bona Sforza , with him died the Jagiellonian dynasty , which had ruled the country since 1386 , and has prevailed the principle that the monarch should be elected by all the nobility (which put the nobility in a position of extraordinary privilege).
