December 1 is World AIDS Day. AIDS is the last stage of an HIV infection, the point at which a person's immune system is so badly damaged, they become vulnerable to other infections. Without proper treatment, a person diagnosed with AIDS will not survive. In 1988, World AIDS Day was created to bring attention to this incurable disease by promoting prevention, testing and treatment.

World AIDS Day 2016

In the lead-up to World AIDS Day 2016, the hands up for #HIVprevention campaign will explore different aspects of HIV prevention and how they relate to specific groups of people, such as adolescent girls and young women, key populations and people living with HIV. The power of prevention is not being realized. If there is a resurgence in new HIV infections now, the epidemic will become impossible to control. The world needs to take urgent and immediate action to close the prevention gap.
