A Day in the History- 23rd June 1943 Prisoner Leo Hazan (number 114364) was caught during his attempt to escape from the camp. He was a Jew from Greece. He was executed in the yard of Blok 11 on 25th June 1943 after the selection. He was born in 1912 in Manastyr. 'A Street in the Women’s Camp', painting by Janina Tollik ~ Women in the cold, in the women's camp at Auschwitz II-Birkenau, B1A, probably just before the Appel, or Roll Call. The only well-fed woman is the CAPO. Capos were the supervisors who held the power of life or death over their charges. Many were brutal, even beating inmates to death. Some others helped the prisoners when they could, though this was difficult and perilous.
Micyslaw Koscielniak art: Already a prominent artist He was arrested in 1941 and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. His camp number was 15261. In the camp he drew about 300 paintings depicting the everyday life of prisoners. His work is currently displayed in the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.
Originally designed for fifty-two horses, these wooden stables were used extensively in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Each provided the living space for over a thousand prisoners. More than two hundred of these barracks were built. In typical, thorough fashion, they were constructed complete with the rings for tying the horses attached to the walls
