Olav Tjønneland ble født i Langvike i Grimstad 5 september 1914. Mor og far kom fra Vigsdalen i Sunnfjord, og var oppvokst på to nabogårder. Når Olav var 2 år gammel flyttet familien til Tjøme. Tjønneland tok middelskole i Tønsberg, hvor han bodde på hybel i ukedagene og hjemme hos familien på Tjøme i helgene. Artium tok han i Eidsvoll Landgymnas og bodde da permanent på hybel.
