Metiendo Mano

I remember just as if it was yesterday that the 8-track cartridge of Metiendo Mano (Fania 500) arrived at record stores before the single “Pablo Pueblo” was played on the radio. I bought my copy at Joyería Danilú in Canóvanas, Puerto Rico, for only $4.99. In 1977, I was one of the thousands of salseros who approached Colón's new work with trepidation. After bringing an end to his partnership with Héctor Lavoe and recording a special project with Mon Rivera, Willie presented Blades as the new…

Crime Pays

Eight years after its creation, Fania Records had accumulated such a sizable catalog of artists that it began to issue compilations from its roster of hit-making stars such as Willie Colón, Larry Harlow, Johnny Pacheco, and Ray Barretto. In fact, Crime Pays was the first anthology the label put out in 1972. The ironically titled Crime Pays was a comment on the success of Colón’s carefully cultivated bad guy image that he sustained until the mid-1970s. The anthology compiles nine key cuts…

Cosa Nuestra

The hegemony of Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe in the circuit of rising youth bands in New York around the middle of the 1960s was consolidated at the end of 1969 with the launch of the LP “Cosa Nuestra”. The cover photograph, a Henri Wolfe original, recreates a typical crime scene of the mafia and the underworld: a murder which would not leave behind any traces or fingerprints because the victim’s body would be disposed of in the Hudson River with an enormous rock tied to his feet. As the…

The Hustler

This is the classic second album that Willie Colón recorded with Héctor Lavoe as his lead vocalist. The session would dictate the stylistic direction that both men took as one of the greatest salsa duos in history. Their debut album El Malo (1967) boasted a trombone heavy sound that was raw and unorthodox-- perceived by the public as part of the Latin soul craze of the boogaloo and shing-a-ling. Some of the tracks onThe Hustler (1968) made reference to the crossover trends. The rest of the…
