Young Australian Magpies playing. Or rather fighting over strength
When the young magpies (Gymnorhina tibicen) leave the nest, more than a year of dependence on the family follows. Usually two of them will follow each other as siblings, and the dominance needs to be sorted out. This takes the two on a constant road of interaction. When the young have reached a certain aged, they are usually chased away from the flock. Only a few are allowed to stay. All others will gather in big flocks, live together and never mate.
