Harry S. Truman returned from one of his famous strolls about Independence. After leaving office in 1953, the former president lived at his wife’s family home at Truman Road and Delaware Street until his death in December 1972. “Take a two-mile walk every morning before breakfast,” he once advised. It worked for him; despite the stress of nearly two full terms in the White House, he lived to be 88. The home is now part of the National Park Service.
