The world's largest electric clock was at the old Singer Sewing Machine factory in Kilbowie Road, Clydebank, Dunbartonshire. The company produced millions of machines and sent them all over the world. The factory opened in 1885 with 5000 workers increasing to over 16,000. The 200ft. clock tower's 4 faces, each weighing 5 tons, took 4 men 15 min, 2X's / week, to wind. The tower was demolished in 1963. By 1970 competition from Japan reduced the workforce to 5000 and in 1980 the factory closed.
