I did this sketch to commemorate a friend and former colleague that died in August, on his 94th birthday. He was the first architectual investigator that I worked with when I joined the Royal Commission in 1981. We worked on a number of projects together, mostly things I did for him in my spare time. He also put me in touch with several other people so I could help them with their projects. My career would have been very different had I not met him. I sat quietly in the army chapel for almost an hour thinking of him before starting this sketch. He always encouraged me to push the boundaries of what I knew, tackling this drawing with a pen with no preliminary pencil work, accepting the mistakes, so I could learn from them, all part of his philosophy. The army chapel was also appropriate as he served in the Royal Engineers in 1944-45, building airfields and bridges, often under fire. An episode he always played down. RIP J T Smith FSA.
