Christmas cards in 2015 might carry a cheery Norwegian fir or a cheeky Santa but wind back the clock by 150 years and you'll find festive missives with an altogether more unusual flavour.

I have always had a fascination for antique postcards ~ any holiday...but the Christmas ones are quite strange indeed. Murderous frogs, children boiled in teapots and a mouse riding a lobster are generally not images seen today on Christmas cards but in Victorian times it was all par for the course.
