In the early hours of Sunday, 4 September, Solar Orbiter flew by Venus for a gravity-assist manoeuvre that alters the spacecraft’s orbit, getting it even closer to the Sun. As if trying to get the orbiter’s attention as it cosied up to another body in the Solar System, the Sun flung an enormous 'coronal mass ejection' straight at the spacecraft and planet just two days before their closest approach – and the data are revealing.
ESA’s Proba-2 captured two partial solar eclipses on 25 October 2022 while observers on Earth enjoyed one. For us on Earth, the Moon passes only once in front of the Sun during a solar eclipse. Since Proba-2 orbits the Earth in about 100 minutes, it was able to observe this eclipse twice. Additionally, the Moon was first observed while traversing the field of view in the upper right corner, but not blocking any solar light. Image: ESA/ROB
