Solomon was a very wise man, whose reign began in humility but ended in pride. At the beginning, Solomon’s wisdom was intimately connected with his worshipful godliness. But as Solomon matured and grew in power and stature, he became a very worldly man. Godliness and worldliness do not go together. Despite Solomon’s great wisdom, which was undeniable, Solomon’s worldliness later in his life kept him from maintaining his godliness.
