Most things you paint, you should prime first! This gives something for your paint to grip onto. It seals the surface. 

And guess what, you also DON’T need a paint sprayer to get a smooth finish. (Will a sprayer get you the SMOOTHEST finish, yes. But for the average person, you can tackle projects without a paint sprayer) 
Sheetrock - PVA primer 
Wood - latex primer
Hard to adhere to surfaces - shellac primer
