Both volumes of The Story of the Jews by Simon Schama have to be my favorite Jewish history books. Schama's style and narrative make for a story filled with witt and characters we can easily visualize. There's no regurgitating of obscure dates and facts--it reads more like a historical novel that helps you understand how the Jews managed to keep their religion and identity in tact inspite of prejudice and destruction. It gives you a deep appreciation for the history of the Jewish people.
