What is the Secret to Making Little Pockets?

If you have any tips, please share! I generally avoid dealing with them, preferring to make them larger if the garment can accommodate them, or skipping them altogether. I have trouble getting any two little pockets to come out looking anything like a matched pair once the pockets get below a certain size. But I really, really wanted to make these jeans with pockets. So I spent some time experimenting to see if I could find a way to improve the shape and consistency of my pockets. You can still see the ones on the jeans are not identical, but they're much better than anything I've been able to produce in the past. Here's what I did: 1. I enlarged the original patterns seam allowances from the usual 5cm to a 1/4". I made sure the sides and top of the pattern were square. 2. I made a cardboard template from it. 3. I made absolutely certain to cut each pocket on the grain. By that I mean I pulled a thread for the top and parallel sides and cut along that line, using the template to measure the size and cut the V'd bottom. I cut each pocket separately. 4. I made another cardboard template of the finished pocket size (without the seam allowances). 5. I placed this cardboard template on each cut pocket, wrong side up, and folded the seam allowances over it. Again, ensuring it was positioned on the grain. 6. Pressed the seam allowances with the template in place. Then removed the template and gave the pocket a good steam with a wet press cloth. 7. Hand basted the pocket into position on the back of the jeans. 8. Topstitched in place with the sewing machine. The rest of the pockets in the pile are my failed attempts with trying some other things that didn't work out so well.
