Put on your most fabulous hat and grab a mint julep, it's time to head to the races! These are the most famous Kentucky Derby horses in the competition's illustrious history.

Derby Trophy made of gold was first presented in 1875. In 1924 the standard design was commissioned. No real changes were made except for jeweled embellishments for special anniversaries. But in 1999 the point of the horse shoe which had always pointed downward was changed to point upward.Churchill Downs officials decided to defer to racing lore ..that if the horseshoe is turned down all the luck will run out.
