The calling birds are “colly” birds in the original version of the song. Colly (or collie) is from “colliery,” an Old English word for coal mines. It was also used when referring to blackbirds, as in “black like coal.” The colly bird is most likely the Common Blackbird, also called the Eurasian Blackbird. They weren’t called blackbirds until 1486. Common Blackbirds have a musical song and are the national bird of Sweden. They inhabit Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
