the art room procedure is shown in this graphic diagram, which shows how to use it

Of all the things new teachers ask me "how do you manage your class room" is the #1 question. My response is keep it simple. I am a huge believer in the Love & Logic method. If you have never read this book stop what ever you are doing and go over to Amazon and get a copy. There is a new version as of 2016 for $37 or the older one pictured below for only $5. I study out of the older version and it will absolutely change your life...it did mine. I was teaching in a low-income Title One school…

a woman sitting in front of a tv with the words how i start every class

Okay, so I'm gonna be honest: I'm not GREAT with consistency. BUT...I am consistent when I run my art class. Full disclosure: my art classes are (and yes, I still use the present tense; I've only been out of the art room for a month and I will always consider myself an art teacher so you'll have to forgive me) 30 minutes long with all grades, kindergarten through 4th. So even tho I don't consider myself a consistent person by nature, I've had to force myself to be for the sake of getting any…

classroom management strategy from an art teacher cover image with text that reads 5 classroom management practices from an art teacher

I was so scared I was going to be a bad teacher. I have loved art since I was a kid. I grew up in a creative household that put art, music and creative expression before anything else. We painted and drew around the kitchen table daily, made homemade movies on the weekends and I got my first ukulele when I was a toddler. Art …

art posters for the classroom | Posted by Mrs. Johnson at 11:59 AM

We are enjoying our art room jobs this year. After thinking about the daily jobs that we do in the art room, I listed the six most frequent tasks. Last year I had a "helper table" that helped with everything that day. This year, I am giving each table a job to do each week. The color for each job stays the same for the entire week for all of my classes to make it manageable. If we are not painting, the table that would handle washing the brushes does "quality control". Otherwise, my job is…

many different colored papers on a table in a room filled with books and other items

I always compare teaching art to being a cocktail waitress in a beehive. Imagine... 35 kindergarteners on the first day of art It's very hectic, messy, and your customers are pretty needy. I teach PreK through third grade. I believe that you have to teach students how to not only treat you, but your procedures and routines. When you do this you can actually get a lot accomplished in the 50 minute class once a week. Here are a few of the most important things I've learned over the last 8…

ORGANIZING, KEEPING TRACK, SAFETY, AND ADDRESSING THEFT............. The more time you spend trying to get organized, the easier it becomes. Take it in steps! Be kind to yourself and give yourself a pat on the back every time you get one section organized the way you like! It is definitely worth it to invest time in organization; keep trying and your efforts will pay off! An organized classroom is good for your mental health as well as the kids.' Studies show that neat, clean environments…
