This display shows the evolution of wing rib construction and cross-sections. From top to bottom are: Piper J-3 Cub (1939), Franklin Sport 90 (1929), Star Cavelier (1929), Ryan WL1 (1926), Curtiss JN-4 (1918), Halberstadt (D.1), and Wright Model B (1911).

The previous discussions on wings have dealt only with airfoil section properties and two dimensional airflow. Wing planform - the shape of the wing as viewed from directly above - deals with airflow in three dimensions, and is very important to understanding wing performance and airplane flight
