The Fokker Spin was the first airplane built by Anthony Fokker. The many bracing wires made the plane resemble a giant spider, hence its name Spin (Dutch for "spider"). Fokker, while studying in Germany, built the Spin in 1910 together with Jacob Goedecker and business partner Franz von Daum, who procured the engine. The DEMOISELLE is one of the most historic, yet seldom seen, aircraft ever designed. It was built in 1908 by Santos Dumont. In 1910 Popular Mechanics magazine had a feature article on it. You could say that it was the original ultralight aircraft. The engine developed only 35 horsepower pulling the plane along at 45 mph. It was one of the featured aircraft in that great old aviation movie "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines."
Romanian inventor Aurel Vlaicu flew for the first time in the world a metal aircraft (June 17, 1910). On September 28, 1910, as a part of the fall military exercises, Vlaicu flew his airplane from Slatina to Piatra Olt carrying a message, the first instance of an airplane being used for military purposes.
