August 3, 1946: Santa Claus Land opens. Known today as Holiday World & Splashin' Safari, it was the world's first themed amusement park. It began as a retirement project for Louis J. Koch, who realized that many children were disappointed when they visited Santa Claus, Indiana and found that Santa was not in residence. Later, Koch's son would marry "Santa's" daughter. The park, which did not charge admission until 1955, is now owned and operated by 7th generation Kochs.
